A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting Earth's shadow onto the lunar surface. This can only happen during a full moon, but because the Moon's orbital plane is tilted about five degrees relative to Earth's orbit around the Sun, eclipses do not occur at every full moon—only when the alignment is precise enough for the shadow to fall on the Moon.

There are three types of lunar eclipses. A total lunar eclipse (often called a Blood Moon) occurs when the Moon passes entirely through Earth's darkest shadow (the umbra), turning a striking reddish-copper color as Earth's atmosphere bends sunlight around the planet's edge. A partial lunar eclipse happens when only part of the Moon enters the umbra, creating a visible shadow across a portion of the surface. A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through Earth's lighter outer shadow (the penumbra), producing a subtle dimming that is often difficult to observe with the naked eye.

In astrology, lunar eclipses are considered supercharged full moons that accelerate change, reveal hidden truths, and mark significant turning points. While a regular full moon illuminates what has been growing over the past two weeks, an eclipse illuminates themes that have been building over months or even years. Eclipses are associated with fated events, sudden realizations, and endings that clear the way for new chapters.

Lunar eclipses always occur along the nodal axis—the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic (the Sun's apparent path through the zodiac). The North Node represents your direction of growth and destiny, while the South Node represents past patterns and what you are releasing. Eclipse seasons, which occur approximately every six months, activate a pair of opposite zodiac signs for about 18 months, creating a sustained period of transformation in the life areas governed by those signs.

Many astrologers recommend a different approach to lunar eclipses than regular full moons. Rather than actively performing release rituals, the guidance is to observe what the eclipse brings to the surface naturally. Eclipses are thought to carry their own momentum—events and revelations unfold without needing to be forced. Journaling, resting, and staying open to unexpected developments are often more productive than trying to control outcomes.

Pay attention to what happens in the days surrounding a lunar eclipse, as the effects are thought to ripple outward for weeks or even months. Events near an eclipse may not reveal their full significance immediately. A conversation, decision, or realization that occurs during eclipse season may set changes in motion that unfold gradually over the following six months until the next eclipse in the same sign family.
