The 12 Astrological Houses

The 12 houses divide the birth chart into sections, each governing a specific area of life. Where planets fall determines where their energy is most active in your world.

How houses work

Houses are calculated using your birth time and location. The wheel is divided into 12 sections starting at the Ascendant (the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at birth). Each house cusp falls in a particular zodiac sign, and any planet sitting inside a house brings its energy to that life area. A house with no planets isn't empty or inactive — its ruling planet elsewhere in the chart still influences it.

1

The House of Self

Identity · Appearance · First impressions · The bodyRuled by Aries / Mars

The 1st house is the most personal part of your chart. It begins at the Ascendant (Rising sign) — the exact degree of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. This house governs your outward personality, physical appearance, and the face you present to the world before people know you. Planets here have a strong, visible influence on how others perceive you and how you initiate things.

2

The House of Resources

Money · Possessions · Values · Self-worthRuled by Taurus / Venus

The 2nd house covers material resources — income, savings, possessions — but also the less tangible: your values and sense of self-worth. What you own, what you earn, and what you consider truly valuable all live here. Saturn here can indicate financial discipline or scarcity; Jupiter can suggest natural abundance or a generous relationship with money.

3

The House of Communication

Thinking · Speaking · Writing · Siblings · Short travelRuled by Gemini / Mercury

The 3rd house governs how you think, speak, and write — your mental style and the way you exchange information with the immediate world around you. It also covers siblings, neighbors, short-distance travel, and early schooling. Mercury, the planet of communication, naturally resonates with this house.

4

The House of Home & Roots

Home · Family · Origins · Private life · FoundationsRuled by Cancer / Moon

The 4th house is the base of the chart — literally the bottom of the wheel — and represents your foundations: home, family, ancestry, and your private inner life. It describes the environment you grew up in and the one you create for yourself as an adult. The sign and planets here color your relationship with family and what "home" means to you emotionally.

5

The House of Creativity & Pleasure

Creativity · Romance · Children · Play · Self-expressionRuled by Leo / Sun

The 5th house is where you play, create, and shine. It governs creative self-expression, romantic flings (as distinct from committed partnership), children, hobbies, and anything pursued for joy rather than obligation. A heavily occupied 5th house often points to someone who needs creative outlets and puts a lot of energy into self-expression and fun.

6

The House of Work & Health

Daily routines · Work · Health · Service · HabitsRuled by Virgo / Mercury

The 6th house governs the day-to-day: your work environment, daily routines, physical health, and acts of service to others. Unlike the 10th house (career ambition), the 6th is about the actual work itself — the grind, the habits, the body that has to show up each day. Planets here often show up strongly in someone's approach to health and how they manage (or resist) routine.

7

The House of Partnerships

Marriage · Committed relationships · Contracts · Open enemiesRuled by Libra / Venus

The 7th house is the house of the "other" — committed partnerships of all kinds, including marriage, long-term romantic relationships, and significant business partnerships. It also traditionally covers open enemies (people who openly oppose you). The sign on the 7th house cusp — called the Descendant — often describes qualities you seek in partners or project onto them.

8

The House of Transformation

Death · Rebirth · Shared resources · Sexuality · Hidden thingsRuled by Scorpio / Pluto & Mars

One of the most complex houses, the 8th governs transformation, shared resources (inheritance, joint finances, taxes), sexuality, and deep psychological change. It's associated with death — not always literal, but the endings that make way for something new. Planets here often operate beneath the surface and can point to areas of profound personal transformation over a lifetime.

9

The House of Philosophy & Expansion

Higher education · Travel · Philosophy · Beliefs · PublishingRuled by Sagittarius / Jupiter

Where the 3rd house covers short trips and early learning, the 9th governs long-distance travel, higher education, philosophy, religion, and the search for meaning. It's the house of the worldview — what you believe about how the universe works and why. Jupiter, the planet of expansion, rules here, and planets in the 9th often describe a person's relationship to faith, learning, and cultural breadth.

10

The House of Career & Public Life

Career · Reputation · Authority · Public standing · AmbitionRuled by Capricorn / Saturn

The 10th house sits at the very top of the chart (the Midheaven, or MC) and represents your public life: career, reputation, authority figures, and the legacy you build. Unlike the 6th house (daily work), the 10th is about aspiration and how the world sees you professionally. Planets here are very visible and often play out in your relationship to ambition, authority, and public recognition.

11

The House of Community & Hopes

Friends · Groups · Social causes · Long-term goals · CollectiveRuled by Aquarius / Uranus & Saturn

The 11th house governs your social world beyond intimate relationships: friend groups, communities, organizations, and collective causes. It also covers long-term hopes and wishes. Where the 5th house is about individual creative joy, the 11th is about finding your tribe and what you contribute to something larger than yourself.

12

The House of the Hidden & Transcendent

Solitude · Unconscious · Hidden enemies · Karma · SpiritualityRuled by Pisces / Neptune & Jupiter

The 12th house is the last and most interior — the house of retreat, solitude, hidden matters, and the unconscious. It governs what operates behind the scenes in your life, including self-undoing patterns, things kept private or secret, and spiritual surrender. Planets here often work quietly and can represent areas where you have blind spots or where transformation happens slowly and deeply.
