Astrological Aspects

Aspects are the geometric angles formed between planets in a birth chart. Where a planet's sign and house tell you what and where, aspects tell you how the planets relate to each other — whether they cooperate, clash, or create tension that drives growth.

What is an orb?

Aspects aren't only exact. A conjunction isn't only when two planets are at precisely the same degree — it applies when they're close enough that their energies meaningfully interact. That margin of closeness is called the orb.

Most astrologers use orbs of 6–8° for the major aspects (conjunction, opposition, trine, square, sextile) and tighter orbs of 2–3° for the minor aspects. The tighter the orb — the closer to exact — the more strongly the aspect is felt. An exact square between Mars and Saturn at the same degree is more intense than one with a 7° orb.

The major aspects

Conjunction

Orb: ±8°Neutral — depends on planets involved

A conjunction occurs when two planets occupy the same degree of the zodiac. Their energies merge and intensify each other. Whether a conjunction is harmonious or challenging depends almost entirely on which planets are involved. Sun conjunct Jupiter tends to be expansive and fortunate. Mars conjunct Saturn creates tension between drive and restriction. Conjunctions are among the most powerful aspects in a chart — the planets can't ignore each other.

Example

Mercury conjunct Sun: the mind and the ego are deeply intertwined. Communication feels very personal; it can be hard to separate "what I think" from "who I am."

Opposition

180°Orb: ±8°Challenging — polarization, awareness

Planets in opposition sit directly across the chart from each other — in signs of opposite nature. The tension here is one of polarization: the two planetary energies pull in opposite directions, often creating a push-pull dynamic in that area of life. Oppositions tend to play out through relationships, as we often project one side of the opposition onto other people.

Example

Venus opposite Pluto: a deep tension between love and control, attraction and obsession. Relationships may feel intensely transformative — even destabilizing.

Trine

120°Orb: ±8°Harmonious — ease, natural flow

Trines connect planets in the same element (fire to fire, earth to earth, etc.), creating a natural flow of energy between them. Trines are the "easy" aspects — the planets cooperate, their energies blend smoothly, and things tend to come more naturally in those areas. The challenge with trines is that they can lead to complacency — gifts that are so natural they go undeveloped.

Example

Moon trine Jupiter: emotional generosity comes naturally. There's an innate optimism and warmth that others find comforting, sometimes without the person even trying.

Square

90°Orb: ±8°Challenging — friction, growth through tension

Squares connect planets in signs of the same modality but different elements, creating friction. The two planetary energies work at cross-purposes — each one's needs clash with the other's. Squares are considered challenging aspects but are also among the most productive drivers of growth. The friction demands that you find a way to integrate two conflicting drives, which usually builds real strength over time.

Example

Saturn square Mars: drive (Mars) is constantly frustrated by limitation and delay (Saturn). This can feel maddening, but people with this aspect often develop extraordinary discipline and persistence precisely because nothing comes easily.

Sextile

60°Orb: ±6°Harmonious — opportunity, cooperation

Sextiles connect planets in complementary elements (fire/air or earth/water), creating an easy cooperative energy. Sextiles are gentler than trines and tend to represent opportunities rather than automatic gifts — the energy is supportive, but you still need to do something with it.

Example

Venus sextile Mars: a nice balance between receptive and active energy. Attraction and pursuit feel natural and unthreatening. Creative projects and romantic connections tend to develop with relative ease.

Quincunx (Inconjunct)

150°Orb: ±3°Awkward — adjustment, incompatibility

The quincunx connects signs that share neither element nor modality — they have no natural common ground. The energy is awkward and requires constant adjustment. Unlike the square, where the tension is direct and confrontational, the quincunx is more like a persistent misalignment. Planets in quincunx often describe areas of life where you have to work harder to find a workable middle ground.

Example

Sun quincunx Moon: the core identity and the emotional needs are fundamentally out of sync. What makes you feel emotionally safe and what makes you feel like yourself pull in subtly different directions — requiring ongoing negotiation.

Aspect patterns

When multiple planets form a configuration of aspects together, they create a named pattern with its own meaning. Common patterns include:

Grand Trine

Three planets forming three trines (each 120° apart), all in the same element. An extremely harmonious configuration that brings ease and natural talent — but can also indicate a closed circuit of energy that resists outside input.

T-Square

Two planets in opposition, with a third squaring both. A highly activated, challenging pattern that creates dynamic tension and a strong drive to resolve conflict. The planet at the apex of the T (squaring both others) is under the most pressure.

Grand Cross

Four planets forming two oppositions and four squares. Intense, demanding, and creates a person driven to resolve fundamental tensions between four areas of life simultaneously.

Stellium

Three or more planets in the same sign or house. Concentrates energy and emphasis in one area — the sign and house become defining themes.

Yod (Finger of God)

Two planets in sextile, both forming quincunxes to a third apex planet. A fated, uncomfortable configuration associated with a specific mission or area requiring constant adjustment.
